Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition

Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition fills many of the same roles as Standard Edition and adds features primarily geared toward improving reliability and scalability. Enterprise Edition supports a maximum of eight processors, which is double Standard Edition’s capability. Enterprise Edition also supports Address Windows Extensions (AWE), providing an extra gigabyte of memory to applications by reserving only 1GB for Windows, rather than Standard Edition’s 2GB/2GB split between the operating system and applications.

Enterprise Edition also supports Windows Clustering, allowing you to build failover clusters with two nodes. The Cluster Service allows you to create clustered file shares and clustered printers and supports clustered applications, such as SQL Server Enterprise Edition and Exchange Server Enterprise Edition. The Cluster Service even enables you to cluster applications that aren’t specifically designed for clustering, provided they meet certain criteria spelled out in the Windows online documentation.

Types of Viruses

Computer viruses can be classified into several different types. The first and most common type is the virus which infects any application program. On IBM PC’s and clones running under PC-DOS or MS-DOS, most programs and data which do not belong to the operating system itself are stored as files. Each file has a file name eight characters long, and an extent which is three characters long. A typical file might be called “TRUE.TXT”, where “TRUE” is the name and “TXT” is the extent. The extent normally gives some information about the nature of a file—in this case “TRUE.TXT” might be a text file. Programs must always have an extent of “COM”, “EXE”, or “SYS”. Under DOS, only files with these extents can be executed by the central processing unit. If the user tries to execute any other type of file, DOS will generate an error and reject the attempt to execute the file.

Search Engines

The key to finding anything on the Internet is to use a search engine, but if you ask different search engines to find the same information, each one will find a number of websites not found by the others. Rather than limiting yourself to the tunnel vision of a single search engine, experiment with some of the different search engines listed below, and you may uncover information that your favorite search engine missed. Even better, you may find that one search engine is better at finding certain types of data or offers a unique perspective to searching for information. For example, the Teoma search engine tries to cluster search results into subjects. So if you search for "Mustang," the Teoma search engine clusters the results according to "Ford Mustang" and "Mustang horses." The following list includes some of the more powerful search engines:

Network Media

The type of cabling used in a network is called the network medium. Today, networks use many types of cables, although only a few types are in common usage. Some of the more exotic types of cables are very expensive. The type of cabling can have an influence on the speed of the network, although for most small- to medium-sized local area networks this is not a major issue. Twisted pair cabling is one of the most commonly used network mediums because it is cheap and easy to work with. Unshielded twisted pair cables—often called UTP—look just like the cable that attaches your household telephone to the wall jack. Twisted pair cables have, as its name suggests, a pair of wires twisted around each other to reduce interference. There can be two, four, or even more sets of twisted pairs in a network cable.
