DHTML, or Dynamic HTML, is the result of combining HTML, CSS, and JavaScript: it uses scripts to dynamically modify the style — which may include the position and visibility — of document elements. In the W3C and the IE 4 DOMs, every document element has a style property that corresponds to the HTML style attribute that specifies inline styles. Instead of referring to a simple string, however, the style property refers to a Style object that has properties corresponding to each of the CSS attributes of the style.

The File Transfer Protocol (FTP) is one protocol in the TCP/IP family used to transfer files between machines running TCP/IP (FTP-like programs are also available for some other protocols). The File Transfer Protocol enables you to transfer files back and forth and manage directories. FTP is not designed to give you access to another machine to execute programs, but it is the best utility for file manipulation. To use FTP, both ends of a connection must be running a program that provides FTP services. The end that starts the connection (the client) calls the other end (the server) and establishes the FTP protocol through a set of handshaking instructions.

Before you build your Web site, you may want to consider its organization. While more than likely you have thought of many ways of organizing your Web site’s structure, you have probably thought about it from a navigational perspective. In addition to thinking about it from that angle, I would suggest that you also think about your Web site’s structure from a maintenance point of view. What can you do to make your Web site easier to maintain? What conventions will simplify the structure of your pages?

The result of this early structuring process will help you set a standard to guide your efforts. Now that you have your server up and running, it would be a good opportunity to consider a few of the issues involved. By no means, is this the only approach that you can use. Any thought-out logical system should serve you equally well. Many of the ideas presented here are used at accessLINK, inc., a small Web presence provider where I spend many hours of my day. AccessLINK develops several small- to medium-sized Web sites per week and maintains a few more on a daily basis. This article presents some of the ideas that I use for organizing our work. Every Window object has a document property that refers to a Document object. The Document object is arguably more important than the Window object itself: while the Window represents the browser window, the Document object represents the HTML document that is displayed in that window. The Document object has various properties that refer to other objects which allow access to and modification of document content.
